Return to the Suspension Bridge

over the Cumberland River

(Stones River Greenway)

We need to return to this site as someone forgot their painting geat last week! It can happen - so, you draw and you do value studies instead. You never miss an opportunity. It's really a good spot to paint (or sketch) - river to right, river to left, bridge itself, trail underneath, bikers, what else could you ask for.

Directions:
From Briley Parkway take the Two Rivers Exit (Wave Country Pool & Skateboard).
Follow Two Rivers Parkway to the Wave Country/ Skateboard area (East side of Briley).
Park up on the hill (you see Skateboard area on your right) go past it to the far right side of the parking lot. (The trail is right next to you - you can't miss it.)
Park and walk down the trail (under Briley) and up again onto the bridge.

I have pictures on my phone, but you don't want to wait for me to get them into this computer.
Will try to show you some pix next week.

Suspension Bridge over the Cumberland River

The bridge itself is gorgeous - not to mention the panoramic view from it.

We were here last year in July - but it was HOT. Tomorrow should be great - will be in the 70's - not supposed to hit 80 until 11:00 a.m.

Directions:

From Briley Parkway take the Two Rivers Exit (Wavecounty Pool & Skateboard).

Follow Two Rivers Parkway to the skateboard area (East side of Briley).

Park up on the hill (Skateboard area) - you can't miss it.

Park and walk down the trail (under Briley) and up again onto the bridge.

Plein Air Artist, Jason Saunders, offers unique opportunity.

This is open to any painter - not just plein air.

*Summer Still Life Open Studio. Six Wednesday Nights 5-9:00ish. FREE exept for approximately $10. each session for purchase of still life materials or model fee.

July 8th,15th,29th, August 5th, 19th, and 26th. Come out to the country and paint and learn. Jason has built a new studio and workspace comfortably large enough for multiple setups. Located in the Leipers Fork area. This is an open studio style class. This is not a structured class. This is for those who just want to work together and learn together. Anyone is welcome to come out to paint, watch, and/or study. We will have several still life setups, and occationally a model. You must bring your own equiptment and take it with you each week. Historic Richland

This is a wonderful residential neighborhood and a great place to paint.... tree-lined streets, beautiful old homes, to-die-for landscaping. We start early to be finished before the heat!!! Come out and join us.

Directions:

From Nashville - Go West on West End/Harding, Go Past 440, turn Right on Bowling (about 2 blocks), then Left on Richland Av.(1 block). Here you will find about two or three blocks of homes worthy of a painting.... the streets going West are Bowling, Craighead, Christopher, Wilson. Drive up and down Richland until you find one you want to paint.
From 440 - Get off at West End/Harding, Go West - then same as above.

From West - Turn Left on Bowling, couple blocks before 440. - then same as above.

We actually found it really comfortable and breezy last week along the lake at Shelby Park. It's really a nice place to paint, centrally located and easy to get to. Here are some who braved it on June 20, 2009.

Shelby Park - Lake


The lake at Shelby is the only place in town I can think of that has shade and water. (Had wanted to go downtown, but the thought of hot pavement - not.) So, Shelby it is.

Sorry I can't give directions - it's late - I'm sure you all know how to get there. Just go to the park and find the lake.

It's back to the golf course, where we were two weeks ago because there is everything you need to practice your plein air painting.... plus cafe/coffee shop with restrooms!

Vanderbilt University



Architecture, Magnolias, Sculpture, People - the University has it all. These magnolia pictures were taken last year in June, so they ought to look about the same now. They were magnificent then. There should be something for everyone.

A good place to park is on West End Ave. at 23rd. From there you can walk right onto the campus at the Fine Arts Gallery.
I won't be with you the next two weeks, and hate to miss these magnolias, but have a good time.

This is a good spot to paint - right at the Cheekwood entrance. Besides the course itself, there are some lovely homes. And, there's a coffee/snack shop with restrooms just in case.























We planned to paint in the West Nashville area in order to be nearby the Harding Show, which was moved to this weekend. This is always a wonderful show and I'm sure all of you know at least a few of the participants. It'll be convenient for us to drop in after we paint the golf course.

Birdsong Hollow - Natchez Trace Parkway

(In case of BAD rain - Downtown Leiper's Fork)

Suggested Painting:

Paint Bridge from 8:00 to 10:00

Paint in Leiper's Fork from 10:30 to 12:30

Lunch in Leiper's Fork - 12:30 -

Birdsong Hollow and Highway 96 Double-Arched Bridge is located on the Natchez Trace Parkway at milepost 438.

Completed in 1994, the double-arched bridge that spans Birdsong Hollow received the Presidential Award for Design Excellence in 1995 for its innovative design that rises 155 feet above the valley. The bridge carries Trace travelers 1,648 feet across the valley and Tennessee Highway 96.

The bridge can be viewed from two locations. 1) Just north of the bridge there is a parking area with a view of the bridge and the valley below. 2) Just south of the bridge is an exit ramp that takes you down to Tennessee Highway 96. At the bottom of the hill there is a parking area with a view looking up at the entire length of the bridge. (This is where we will be - South of the bridge - unless the rain/T-storm is really bad and we're in Leiper's Fork!)

Directions:

From Nashville you can take Highway 100 to The Nachez Trace, then #2 above.

From Franklin - take Hwy 96 West to the Bridge

Getting really tired of missing our Saturday paintouts, so we're going no matter what!!! Everybody needs practice painting rain, right? (There are two large covered pavilions, just in case.) You'll be on high ground - on a bluff overlooking the lake. Besides the pavilions, there are picnic tables and a restroom.

Directions:
Take I-40 East to Old Hickory Blvd. (Exit 221B)
Go Right on Old Hickory Blvd.
Go Left on Bell Road to light (S. New Hope Road)
Go Right on S. New Hope Road to dead end (Stewarts Ferry Pike)
Go Left on Stewarts Ferry Pike (past my house)

Continue straight for a little more than a mile to Seven Points - Picnic Area

Plan B - If it's a real downpour, we can paint from my front porch (or from a window) down the road .... 1658 Stewarts Ferry Pike.
