Lori Putnam - From Study to Studio, enlarging a plein air sketch into a larger studio work - $50
Date - May 9, Monday
Description – This one day workshop will improve your skills for using plein air studies, sketches, and paintings to produce larger, studio-sized works. This is not a class on painting technique, so any medium is welcome.
Type of Workshop – Full Day, morning demo
Hours – 9 am to 4 pm
Location –Southgate Studio, The Factory, 230 Franklin Road
Level - Intermediate to Advanced
Class Limit – 15
Supplies – 2-3 plein air works AND printed reference photo of the location in which these works were painted (if available).
Easel that will accommodate a larger canvas
One canvas (20x24 or larger)
Sketchpad and pencil
Paint, brushes, odorless mineral spirits, mediums you prefer to use
Paper towels or rags, trash bag
Notes – Bring your lunch, bottled water provided.
Haden Pickel - Focus on the Figure - $50
Date - May 9, MondayDescription – We will focus on the figure as a trigger for our imagination. There will be a live model. It will be a day of many quick sketches/paintings in order to encourage spontaneity.

Supplies – Your usual plein air easel and set-up
Good brushes. I prefer a variety of filberts. Sizes #2-8. Use what you like. Brushes should be flexible and not stiff, so the paint can be easily loaded onto the brush and will flow off the brush.
Odorless Mineral spirits in a travel container
Canvases...Bring 6-10 canvases, your favorite size is fine. We will be doing quick poses and paintings so 8 X 10 or 9 X 12 will be good. Please feel free to paint larger if you want.
Your favorite palette. Be sure to include THE BASICS:
WHITE CADMIUM YELLOW LIGHT ALIZARIN CRIMSON ULTRAMARINE BLUE
Any other colors that you like. i.e. SAP GREEN can be very handy when plein air painting. And earth colors like Sienna and umber are handy.
Here is my usual palette.

Establishing Value Structure in Landscape Painting - $50
Date - May 10, Tuesday
Description – The class will be an overview of materials and techniques I use including a
brief introduction to the three color palette. It will focus on isolating and identifying the masses
in a landscape and being able to accurately establish the values and their relation to each other.

Values are as important in Painting as they are in Life - $50
Date - May 10, Tuesday
Description – While emphasizing values, Tommy will touch on composition, aerial perspective, edges, photographing artwork.

Kim Barrick - Painting the Impressionist Garden - $50
Date - May 10, Tuesday - Rain Day, Wednesday the 11th
Description – Join Kim for a short demo and a day painting in her 20 year old cottage garden. English roses, iris and lots of colorful wildflowers abound. Enjoy the morning painting with Kim and touring her studio. You will be on your own to paint in the afternoon and then Kim will give a review from 3 to 4 pm.

Jean Gauld-Jaeger - Portrait Painting from Life - $50
Date - May 11, Wednesday
Description – An experienced portrait artist and member of the Portrait Society of America, Jean teaches the principles of portrait painting and color mixing for a variety of skin tones. Students will paint a live model and will concentrate on head and shoulders only.

Bill Barnes – Fine Art – Works for Me! Subtitle –

Description –Described by peers as a true student of art because of his desire to continually explore and learn, Bill has a wealth of commercial and fine art that he will display and discuss with you. It will include the influence of Surrealist school of arts, classic photography, 3D drawing and the way these influences have been integrated into the way he thinks about his work. He offers encouragement in finding new opportunities.

Description – Paula and Pam’s emphasis will be on the basic elements of good painting. The three building blocks they will concentrate on are: Value, Color, and Composition. You will learn how these three important elements work together and how to control each element to see the big picture.

How to Get Depth and Distance in Your Paintings -$50
Date - May 13, Friday
Description – Transform a flat canvas into a world of distant views and open landscapes. You will learn the nuts and bolts of linear perspective as well as shortcuts to achieve atmospheric perspective in your paintings.

Dean Shelton – How to Start Painting Your Heart Out - $50
Date - May 14, Saturday
Description – Students will learn Dean’s method of constructing a painting from choosing the subject; breaking the canvas into large areas; big brush block in; stating and restating the shapes, colors, and values.

Beth Inglish and Megan Nordmann – The Art of Marketing - $35
Date - May 16, Monday
Description – Beth, a Nashville artist, and Megan, with Nashville Arts Magazine, along with Gayle Levee and Cathleen Windham, will host a panel discussion about marketing your art. Discussion will include using online tools, employing a broker or representative, selling your art without a gallery presence, looking at currently available tools, creative ways to find buyers.
