New Year's Eve Paintout

(Sunny and close to 60 today)

Suspension Bridge over the Cumberland River off Briley Parkway.

I passed this spot a few times lately in the late afternoon and could see the river from Briley glowing under the setting sun.... almost ran off the road! Decided it'd be better to park and paint it. Hope someone will join me.

Directions:
From I-40 East - turn North on Briley Parkway
From I-65 South - turn South on Briley Parkway

From Briley Parkway take the Two Rivers Exit (Wavepool / Skateboard).
Follow Two Rivers Parkway to the skateboard area (East side of Briley).
Park up on the hill (Skateboard area) - you can't miss it.
Park and walk down the trail (under Briley) and up again onto the bridge.

All plein air artists are invited to join members of The Chestnut Group Saturday, Sept. 10th at The Hermitage to paint in celebration of the International Plein Air Painters Worldwide Paint Out! We'll start at 8:30am and can stay till about 4pm.

Let them know at the gate you are an artist for free admission. We will gather near the front of the Hermitage for a group photo of all the participating artists at 11am. Please share with your artist friends!

Additional note about the Hermitage paint out.....we can NOT paint near the Tulip Grove Mansion. They are hosting a private corporate event that day there. Any where else on the grounds is fine though!! See you THIS Saturday, 9/10 at The Hermitage!

This is a great opportunity to paint one of the loveliest homes in Nashville. Also, if you want, you can join in the upcoming competition.... the 2011 Juried Art Show and Kim Barrick Workshop.  You can just come paint anytime during the above hours - you don't have to do the show or workshop. (You could go at other times also, but call them first to make sure there were no weddings, etc.)

All you need to do is get a (free) Ground's Ticket at the Gift Shop, then go paint.

Paint with the Chestnut Group in Leipers Fork
(They are painting on a Land Trust for Tennessee protected property owned by Aubrey Preston)

You can paint in the town of Leipers Fork or paint on the Preston Farm.

Directions to the Farm: (Coming into Leipers Fork from Franklin on Old Hillsboro Road)

Just past Southall Road and before you get to the town of Leipers Fork, look for a Black Fence on the Right. There is a Big Hill with a Christmas Tree on Top and there is an Opening in the Fence. Drive through the opening and follow the "Farm Road" (tracks) all the way back (believe it's to the left of the big hill).

If you come to a gate - apply this rule ......

Farm Rule #1: If you open a gate, close it behind you!

At the back of this farm you'll find a big barn where you can park -

you might also find some horses - donkeys - and I hear there is a brand new baby donkey!!
Behind this barn is a fence and another barn with creek (little water now).
You can paint there too, but you'll have to climb the fence to get to it.

There are plenty of places in town for lunch.

Paint on Old Hickory Lake - Saturday - July 23 - 8:00 ish to whenever ..

Shawnee Waters - 1063 Sunset Drive, Gallatin, TN

This beautiful peice of property is on Old Hickory Lake near Hendersonville, surrounded on 3 sides by water. This property is not only protected by the Land Trust for Tennessee, but is also an Arboretum, with Chestnut trees bred back to the Chinese. The trees in the arboretum line the lake and are identified with both botanical and common names. There is also a nature trail that follows the lakeshore.

Directions: (unless you are in Gallatin or East of there)

I-65 North

Right on Vietnam Veterans Blvd (TN-386 N) - signs for Hendersonville/Gallatin

Take Exit 9 to merge onto US-31 N/Johnny Cash Pkwy/E Main St. (main highway into Gallatin)

From Highway 31

Turn Right (South) on Cages Bend Road

Go to Sunset Drive (a little over 3 miles)

Turn Right on Sunset Drive

First drive on Left is 1063

As we have done in the past, we are painting with The Chestnut Group on this lovely Land Trust protected property.

Directions:
From Main Street in Franklin...

Head out of town on West Main (past old homes and old hospital, now Gov. buildings)

West Main turns into Carters Creek Pike

Stay straight on Carters Creek Pike, past Halfway Market on your right

Go approximately 4 miles, past the lake on your right

Once you pass Bear Creek Rd. on right, start looking for a long black fence on left. Driveway at end of fence is 4080.

You will see a pond also. Across from cute house with green tin roof.

4080 is the driveway before and next to Willow Hall Academy.

This is a gorgeous spot and the sunflowers have been in bloom for a week or so. Shade available and as usual, best in mornings and evenings for coolness. Sunflowers pretty no matter what time of day tho.

Hope to see you Sat. I will be there in the a.m. only, but owner said it's ok to paint later as the sunset is also good.

I'm working again for the Chestnut Group's Land Trust fund raiser, Once in a Blue Moon 11. The group will be painting at various land trust properties until the party in October and again, we (PAN) can join them when permitted by the landowners.

Tomorrow there will be a short paintout - only from 8:00 to 11:00 at the Glen Leven "Garden", while volunteers are working in the garden. The mansion suffered fire damage early in the year and no one is permitted on the grounds around the house for a while. The garden is directly behind the big white barn with red roof - park in the field and follow (walk) the drive to the Right of the barn. The garden has an electric fence - so, don't enter the garden until you see the volunteers working.

Easy Directions:
East side of Franklin Rd between Thompson Lane and Harding Place
Stone wall with two gates - only the South gate will be open

Gallatin Pike Historic District – Located in the Inglewood neighborhood in East Nashville, this proposed historic district is comprised of thirteen properties located on the west side of Gallatin Pike between Calvert Street and Virginia Avenue. Local real estate developers platted this particular residential subdivision in 1924 and over the next few years fashionable Tudor Revival and Craftsman-style homes lined Gallatin Pike, an important transportation corridor that shared the state-owned right-of-way with the city’s electric streetcars and an interurban route connecting to Gallatin. In recent years, the entire Gallatin Pike corridor in Davidson County has seen new commercial development, but perhaps none more Inglewood, which has lost several historic properties in recent years including the Albert L. Hadley House in July. The proposed Gallatin Pike Historic District retains a residential feeling and setting due to the number of mature trees and well-maintained lawns. Most of the private homes within the district have already been rezoned commercial and while some have been renovated and repurposed for use as businesses such law and real estate firms. However, recently several of these properties have been listed for sale, undoubtedly due to increased values of commercial property in Inglewood. HNI commends the Inglewood Neighborhood Association for spearheading the recent effort to identify threatened historic properties, including this district. HNI also encourages individual property owners along the Inglewood section of Gallatin Pike to discuss alternatives to with government agency and elected officials.

Jackson House, 3500 Brick Church Pike in the Bordeaux area. This Victorian farm home was built around 1885, but the rear ell contains an earlier building, probably dating to the antebellum period. The home’s location near I-24 makes it a prime attraction to developers who want to subdivide the estate.

(I'm not sure if we can get all around this house, but this view alone has so many possibilities. I can't wait to see it.)

Description – This one day workshop will improve your skills for using plein air studies, sketches, and paintings to produce larger, studio-sized works. This is not a class on painting technique, so any medium is welcome.

Haden Pickel - Focus on the Figure - $50
Date - May 9, MondayDescription – We will focus on the figure as a trigger for our imagination. There will be a live model. It will be a day of many quick sketches/paintings in order to encourage spontaneity.

Good brushes. I prefer a variety of filberts. Sizes #2-8. Use what you like. Brushes should be flexible and not stiff, so the paint can be easily loaded onto the brush and will flow off the brush.
Odorless Mineral spirits in a travel container
Canvases...Bring 6-10 canvases, your favorite size is fine. We will be doing quick poses and paintings so 8 X 10 or 9 X 12 will be good. Please feel free to paint larger if you want.
Your favorite palette. Be sure to include THE BASICS:
WHITE CADMIUM YELLOW LIGHT ALIZARIN CRIMSON ULTRAMARINE BLUE
Any other colors that you like. i.e. SAP GREEN can be very handy when plein air painting. And earth colors like Sienna and umber are handy.

This is the first Historic Nashville, Inc. property we started out to paint several weeks ago. (Since they were in the process of installing a new roof, we moved on to another location.)

Friendship Community Outreach Center – Located in North Nashville at 1703 Jo Johnston Avenue across the street from Pearl-Cohn High School, this c.1900 church building has served the surrounding neighborhood in numerous capacities for the past century. Reflective of the changing racial makeup of the surrounding neighborhood, the church has served both white and African-American congregations. In recent years, the church was converted into the Friendship Community Outreach Center. A few years ago, HNI documented this church as part of its county-wide Sacred Sites Survey Project. HNI encourages the property owner to sell this neighborhood landmark to an organization that will be able to properly renovate and maintain the church.

Additionally, there will be several honorable mentions.)

On the morning of the event, you may go directly to your chosen location to paint. You may begin as early as you choose, but 100% of your painting must be painted on this day ONLY. Return to the galleries at 11:00 to set up (on your easel) in the parking lot and prepare for the judging and the public sale. Paintings must be sold framed, so be sure to bring an appropriate frame for your work.

Parking at the galleries will be unavailable since the parking lot will now be a show room! There will be limited street parking. Call Local Color at 321-3141 or Midtown at 322-9966 for additional parking information.

Snacks and food will be available for purchase from JJ's Market and Noshville.

Countywide Historic Neon Signs were listed on the "2009 Nashville Nine" list of Nashville's most threatened historic places. Although I doubt Loveless is "threatened", it will be a fun place to paint. You can always paint the building or shops if you're not into "neon". Or, the Natchez Trace is nearby.

Directions:

From West Nashville:

Take West End Avenue to the 100/70 split and stay in the left lane as it turns into Highway 100. Travel approximately 7.5 miles to the Loveless. It will be on the right before the Natchez Trace bridge.

From Nashville:

Take I-40 West towards Memphis. Exit 192 McCrory Lane. Turn left and go 4 miles until you dead end into Highway 100. Turn left on Highway 100 and the Loveless Cafe is located directly ahead on the left.

From I-65 South - turn ?? South I guess (towards Opryland) on Briley Parkway

From Briley Parkway take the Two Rivers Exit (Wavecounty Pool & Skateboard).
Follow Two Rivers Parkway to the skateboard area (East side of Briley).
Park up on the hill (Skateboard area) - you can't miss it.
Park and walk down the trail (under Briley) and up again onto the bridge.

No pre-registration necessary. However, when you arrive at Bedford Creek Road, please follow the signs to a "check-in" point marked by balloons. There you will find information about getting around the ranch, what there is to paint, where the restrooms are, mark where you think you may be so others can meet up with you, and some bottled water. Even if no one is sitting at the check in station when you arrive, please sign in so we can report back to OPA a head count for the day.

Bring a lunch, drinking water, and bug spray.

A friend of mine, Mitch Mann, has arranged a day of painting for The Chestnut Group and I just thought there might be some PAN artist out there who'd like to join in. Sorry for this delay, but I just got the idea and ran it by Mitch, sho said "sure, the more the merrier".

The following description is from his announcement ....
The location is the Cedar Hill. This place is GORGEOUS! I just spoke with David Clardy, the owner of the property ... I’m to meet with him at 8:00 am this Saturday morning for any specific instructions. He said that we could be there anytime from 8:00 am to 6:30 pm, so if you want to tackle some warm light, you can. I’m looking forward to seeing many of you there! I hope you can come!

I actually drove through the tiny place of Cedar Hill this past weekend. There’s simply not much there. A small convienience store/gas station is about the limit. It’s 5-10 minutes from the place we’ll paint.

Directions: Take I-24 North of Nashville about 14 miles from Nashville to Hwy 431 (Springfield/Joelton exit #35). Take a right on Hwy 431 and drive for 12.5 miles into Springfield. Take a left at the light (Walgreens on the left corner) on to Memorial Drive (It’s still Hwy 431) for 2.7 miles. Take a left at the light on to Hwy 41 and go for 5.5 miles. Turn right on to Drake Road. Go for .6 mile and then park at the ‘Remshaw’ house. From Nashville, your looking at a 45 minute drive.

This is another Chestnut Group paintout - which PAN can tag-along. We'd love to have you join us, but I will only be there in the morning, so I suggest that you do the same (if you are NOT a Chestnut Group member).

Maplewood *:

This 102-acre tract is situated on the south side of Duplex Road, east side of I-65 in the community of Duplex. Within the whole 590 acres, the land includes a mixture of pastures, hay fields, crops and forestland as well as the historic homestead / farmstead area. The 2-story timber frame house built in 1836 and the log cabin built in 1790 are both on the national historic register. Other buildings include a log kitchen, pump house, smoke house, garage and hay barn. Rutherford Creek flows through the property on its way south to the Duck River. The property is made up of several parcels that are relatively flat to gently sloping.

Directions: You can Google or MapQuest "Duplex, TN"

I am meeting the owner of this property, Mr. John Lee, at 8:00 a.m. He will show (or tell) me and anyone else arriving at that time where we can paint. If you come later, just try to find us or call my cell - 513-0511.

From Nashville

I-65 South
Exit 59B (I-840)
Go South on Hwy 431 (Lewisburg Pike) for 5 1/2 miles (it will go under I-65)
Right at Hwy 247 (Duplex Rd)
Left in 1/2 Mile (this is the driveway into his farm and house)
(If you get to Lee Rd., you've gone too far)

There will be a fork in the road - take the fork with the "cattle gap" (pipes on the road) and drive on up to the house. (I guess we can figure this out.)

From Spring Hill

Go East on Duplex Road
After you pass Lee Rd, go about 1/2 mile
(If you get to Hwy 431, you've gone 1/2 mile too far)

We're tagging along with The Chestnut Group to Karen Guy's gorgeous farm, Hunter's Hill Farm.

This is a fabulous place, with lots and lots to paint! There are multiple barns, fields, vistas, lake, large farmhouse, cows, out buildings. Karen Guy is the owner and quite a girl. She said that the gate at the end of the lane may be shut, but not locked, for earlybirds. If you are first, leave it open for others. All other gates must be kept closed. Bring water and lunch if you want. (This is an old house, with old plumbing - there are NOT restrooms available, so please make your own arrangements.)

Take I-40 East to Exit 221A - you will be on Old Hickory Blvd. heading toward The Hermitage.
Turn Right on Andrew Jackson Blvd. -continue past Lebanon Pike -name changes to Saundersville Ferry Rd
Turn Left on Saundersville Road
Turn Right (almost immediately) at 4049 Saundersville Road - Hunter's Hill Farm

The Chestnut Group will be painting on various Land Trust Properties for the next few months. If permitted by the landowner (as in this case), Plein Air Nashville has been invited to join them paint these beautiful farms and estates. It's a wonderful opportunity for us to see and paint these beautiful Tennessee landscapes.

We'll meet at the Lake Woodhaven Picnic Area. I'm told there is a spillway which is very picturesque at this spot. Just follow the main road through the park (Entrace is on Hwy 70). This road ends at State Hwy 47. If you get to Group Camp No. 2 you've gone too far. I'd suggest you check out and print the map of the park.

I have heard wonderful things about this park for years, but must admit I've never been. So, I'm going by what they told me over the phone. Another area the nice lady mentioned was also off this road (McAdow Cabin and Church).

Once again, The Land Trust for Tennessee will be having their Annual Fundraiser, Once in a Blue Moon, at Glen Leven on October 9, 2010. And The Chestnut Group will again be working with them - painting various Land Trust Properties throughout Tennessee, up until that time. The paintings will then be for sale at the party, with half the proceeds going back to The Land Trust.

We want to kick off this Blue Moon season, with a paintout this Saturday - at Glen Leven. Bring your lunch, spend the day and paint, paint, paint. Thankfully, our steamy weather has left us and it should be very nice.

As we did last year, we will try to paint once during the week and once on the weekend. We're also going to try to cover more territory and see more of these gorgeous sites. Watch your emails!

If you have never been to Glen Leven, there are two gates onto the property. The main gate (in front of the house) will be locked. We are to use the Opened Gate, which is South of the Main Gate. It leads you through a field - almost to the house. Park in this field and walk to the house.

The market is such a wonderfully colorful place on Saturday monrnings. You can find just about anything to paint down there.... fruits, vegetables, flowers, people! If the market is too crowded, there's Bicentennial Mall with fountain or the Bells. And of course, there's a great view of the Capitol.

"Since the early 1800s, local growers have convened downtown to sell their products to the public. What started as a small gathering has evolved into the Nashville Farmer's Market, the largest farmer's market in the Nashville area, and one of our city's best-kept secrets. We wanted a place with some water - to cool off if necessary. This is a beautiful park, with lots of attractions and walking trails and seemed to fit the bill. It's on Percy Priest Lake and can be accessed from I-40 East to Mt. Juliet Rd, Exit 226-A or from I-24 East to Old Hickory Blvd., Exit 62.

We've been invited to paint with renowned plein air painter, Lori Putnam and her visiting artist friend from Australia, Georgia Mansur. (Georgia, celebrated as well, is heading up a paint Australia event for 2011.) You'll be painting with some of the best. Lori picked a beautiful farm site on the West side of Franklin.

The painting will begin about 8:00 a.m. and last all day. Come when you can.

Coming from West Nashville/Bellevue/Bellemeade area:

Take Hwy. 100 to Hwy. 96 east toward Franklin.

Go 1 mile and turn right onto Old Harding Rd.

Coming from Franklin:

Take Hwy. 96 W; go about 12 miles; turn left at Old Harding.

Once you are on Old Harding:

Go 2 miles and turn left at Bedford Creek Rd.

There is a sign that says LLL Ranch.

You can paint anywhere along Bedford Creek Rd. There are horses, cows, distant views, barns, creek, goats, vistas, etc. To meet the group and learn about the lay of the land, and where the restrooms are, follow Bedford Creek Rd. about 1/4 mile to a green sign on the right that reads E. Miles Construction and drive DOWN that driveway to the creek area. You will see my red Jeep Liberty. I will be there at 8:00 a.m., or call my cell at 615-512-0929.

There are restrooms, but NO RESTAURANTS or places to get food and water. It is supposed to be very hot so bring lots of water!!! Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy on your own schedule, or meet the group around 12:30, at the second group of barns, 1/8 mile past the above mentioned area, on the right.

Just so you know, there is only a 20% chance of rain Sat. Some of you will remember Tanglewood. We painted here, Cathleen Windham's neighborhood, back in the Fall. She's invited us again to her interesting little section of East Nashville. (In case of rain or T-strom, we'll just dash into her house/restroom.) Thanks, Cathleen!

Directions:
Fom south/downtown area of I-24/65: Ellington Parkway to Broadmoor exit. Turn right onto Broadmoor. Stay on Broadmoor to Gallatin Road. Turn left onto Gallatin Road, then right at the next light (Hayboro). There's a Shell Station on that corner. Stay on Haysboro all the way to Brush Hill. Turn left onto Brush Hill. You will slip under Briley Parkway and then immediately on your left is Tanglewood Court--turn left. Then take the first right, Tanglewood Drive North. Go to the Tanglewood Entrance, split rail fence on your right. My cabin is the first cabin on the right after the split rail fence. There are NO street/house numbers. My cabin has two rockers and a bench on the front porch.

There's enough parking for about 3 cars in my drive. The rest will need to park outside of Tanglewood (before the split rail fence) on the right side of the drive (near the historic marker) and walk in.

From Airport area: I-40 to Briley Parkway North. Take exit 14 B (Gallatin Pike South). You'll pass Home Depot on your right, then will come to the light at Haysboro (Shell Station on your right). Stay on Haysboro all the way to Brush Hill. Turn left onto Brush Hill. You will slip under Briley Parkway and then immediately on your left is Tanglewood Court--turn left. Then take the first right, Tanglewood Drive North.

Percy Priest Lake - at the Dam

It is supposed to be nice tomorrow and a little cooler. Chance of a few showers Friday night, but ending by 5:00 a.m. Mainly sun!

This little park is on the West side of the Dam. Pull in where you see the sign on the right - Visitors Center - then turn left down the hill and park. There is also a parking area on the East side of the Dam. From there, you can climb down the hill to the water. (There is no shade there.)

You'll probably see someone fishing and children and ducks. This is a great place to paint.

Directions:
Travel East on I-40 to Exit 219 - Stewarts Ferry Pike
Turn Right on Stewarts Ferry Pike
Turn Left at the Stop Light - Bell Road
Turn Right at the sign that says Visitors Center and then down the hill.

We had a huge crowd last week (16 - 18) at Gracie's. She had such a fantastic place and was such a gracious hostess. What a treat it was for us. Wish those would pop up more often. She wrote me that someone left a Stanley thermos about 1' tall and it was a light green, had coffee in it. She left it on the table under the blue tent. There was also a pair of brown sunglasses (but I had seen them and figured they'd been there for awhile).

My name is Gracie. I have two spectacular hills with wildflowers that I think you might enjoy painting. There are yellow primroses, white trillium, Dutchman's breeches, Trout lilies and Virginia bluebells. I live in west Nashville on Charlotte Pike between two hills. You are welcome to come out anytime and paint but if you come on Saturday or Sunday I'd be glad to provide refreshments. The wildflowers begin at the the 40' Native American labyrinth and extend about 300' on both sides of the path up each hill, behind the labyrinth.

My phone is 469.4846 is you wish to call me and directions are:

Take I40 west to exit 199 (Old Hickory Blvd) and bear right to the traffic light. That light is on Charlotte Pike. Turn left onto Charlotte Pike and drive about 2.8 miles. You will see a light blue mailbox and the house number "8033" You may drive across the creek, up the drive and park at the top.

We're staying close to town tomorrow and thought the fountain in front of the Symphony Hall would be nice. At least three of the four corners of the building have sculptures or statutes which would be fun to paint.
There are also several new buildings in the area. It should be a beautiful Spring day.

Don't know about parking - I think the Sat. meters are no longer free. But, on Sat. morning you should have your pick.

Painting Saturday - March 20, 2009 - All day !!!

We're going back to Columbia - as there is so much to paint there - The Chestnut Group will be having their show end of April - and the weather will be gorgeous. And, one more reason (for me) - I finally have decent plein air equipment. Received my first Open Box M - picking up my tripod today and will be ready to try her out tomorrow. (No need to be embarrassed to paint with me anymore.)

I'm not going to list any particular place, just copying directions and some of the public places recommended by Annie Daniel and Kay Farrar, heads of TCG upcoming show.

Come South on I 65, take the Saturn Parkway Exit to Hwy 31(Columbia/Spring Hill Exit).
Stay on 31 all the way to Columbia and the intersection of Main Street on the left and 7th Street on your right. If you turn left you will hit the square and the courthouse and to your right you will have the Polk Home ,Churches , parks and Columbia Academy,etc. There are interesting buildings on 6th street as well as 8th street. Some of the iconic and historic properties that have been suggested are:

Art & Invention Gallery invites you to apply to their upcoming show, “Bells Bend: A Sense of Place”. This show is open to all artists who have created work connected to Bell’s Bend- its landscapes, people, history and future.

Bells Bend is a place where the past—at least ten thousand years of human history—is still visible and the present is very much alive. Some Nashvillians see it as a garden district, others as ancient dirt filled with ten thousand years of history. Some come with their binoculars, while others arrive with jogging shoes or bicycles. At least one plays the fiddle at the local market.

Some view it as pure landscape—barns and rolling fields, while others have more urban visions.

The Vision of “Bell’s Bend: A Sense of Place”, is to let each artist express their ideas and point of view about this wonderful place. What is your take?

Exhibit runs from April 24, 2010 – June 6, 2010, with an Opening Reception on Saturday, April 24 from 6:00pm- 9:00pm

Columbia is a beautiful little Southern town - with Court House on the town square. The Chestnut Group will be having a show at the end of April and they will be in the area painting until then. (I've already heard that a bunch of them will be there tomorrow.) They were sent a long list of suggested places to paint, but I'm suggesting that you go to the Court House to start, corner of Main St. & 7th. Everything is within a few blocks, so feel free to paint anywhere you choose.

Radnor Lake Challenge - January 31, 2010

Paint the Snow and Ice on Radnor Lake
The Challenge to the 2nd Annual ......!!!

A couple weeks ago Kevin Menck and Erin Jones painted in the 2nd Annual Radnor Lake Plein Air Freeze Out. They did this last year too, along with Dawn Whitelaw, and it was even colder. (Don't know if Dawn's schedule was too tight this year or she just wised up ??) I think this takes remarkable courage and stamina (a little nuts too) to paint in this kind of weather. But the lake is certainly beautiful and we don't get snow around here often and I feel a real challenge to try it myself. I challenge all the other plein air painters in the area to show up Sunday with me in support of our art. I promise, you will never forget it. (Even if you don't complete a painting, it will be worth seeing the lake with snow and ice.)

St. Mary's Catholic Church - Downtown Nashville
Charlotte Ave. and 330 Fifth Ave., North, near the State Capitol.

Thought we'd start off the year with a City-Scape. Tomorrow is a holiday (for most) - so downtown will be empty. If you haven't seen it before, the afternoon light downtown in the winter is spectacular on the buildings!!! And, we're having a HEAT WAVE - supposed to be mid-50's.

St. Mary's is an old favorite of mine, being the first Catholic Church (some say first church) in Nashville.

Greek Revival design topped with gold:

The oldest surviving church in Nashville, St. Mary's was used as a military hospital during the War Between the States. St. Mary's Church has traditionally been attributed to William Strickland, architect of the capitol and Downtown Presbyterian Church. Recent evidence from church records indicates that Nashvillian Adolphus Heiman was the architect. This restrained gem of Greek Revival design (1845-47) is the first permanent Roman Catholic church built in Tennessee, replacing a temporary structure nearby at the base of Capitol Hill, St. Mary's was the cathedral of Nashville from its construction until 1914 when the Cathedral of the incarnation was built.

Centennial Park - Nashville

Although this is the Thanksgiving weekend, we're all busy with family and friends, and I will be in Atlanta, I'm sure there will be some of you here in town who can find a few hours to get out and paint. Centennial is such a good place to paint and so central that there are always a few that show up. It's supposed to be beautiful with high of 63. Have a good one and I'll see you next time.

By the way, beginning next week and for the cold winter months, we're going to try meeting in the afternoons when it is a little warmer. The light is really wonderful in the winter, with long shadows in mid to late afternoon making a sort of glow to everything.

Stones River Greenway at Lebanon Pike

This is a Blue Heron who resides on the Stones River in this area (picture taken in the Summer).

There is alot to paint along this little river and we can actually stand under Lebanon Pike and paint an old log house hanging on the cliff.

These are the directions to Kohl's Department Store at 2330 Jackson Downs Blvd. Nashville, 37214. The parking area for the Greenway is in the NE corner of Kohl's parking lot (that's the corner close to Lebanon Rd.). You can't miss it.

Tomorrow is supposed to be gorgeous! Who knows how many more we'll have, so get out and paint!!! This is a beautiful farm we have painted before owned by the Eslick and Annie Daniel. We can paint here (plenty to paint) as well as some other spots in the area which are very picturesque. The section of Leipers Creek Road south of Hwy 7 is on the new Historic Trail. At the intersection of Leipers Creek Rd and Water Valley Rd there are two old grocery stores worth painting, as well as the bridge over the creek and a very old farm with silo. Annie says we can paint all along this area. (She also says we can use her guesthouse at Sweet Easy for necessities.) Thanks Annie.

Tanglewood Neighborhood

We have been invited to paint Cathleen Windham's neighborhood - Tanglewood. This is a quaint section of East Nashville. Pumpkins are strewn about, gourds, a beautiful creek, a little walking bridge, split rail fence, big pots of elephant ears, a well-house (??) fun porches……..you could paint for weeks. Her cabin will be available for bathroom breaks, hot coffee, juice, water, and she said she'd have some breakfast stuff too. These pictures were taken a couple months ago - right now she says there is alot of gold and plenty to paint.

Entrance to Tanglewood

Painters pretty much have the run of the place. There are a couple of cabins and a poolhouse that are occupied, just be respectful of their space but they are very laid back and will likely venture out to see what's going on. The big cabin has a great back area where the creek is, and the owners are out of town till late Saturday eve, so we can paint from most anywhere back there.

Directions:

Fom south/downtown area of I-24/65: Ellington Parkway to Broadmoor exit. Turn right onto Broadmoor. Stay on Broadmoor to Gallatin Road. Turn left onto Gallatin Road, then right at the next light (Hayboro). There's a Shell Station on that corner. Stay on Haysboro all the way to Brush Hill. Turn left onto Brush Hill. You will slip under Briley Parkway and then immediately on your left is Tanglewood Court--turn left. Then take the first right, Tanglewood Drive North. Go to the Tanglewood Entrance, split rail fence on your right. My cabin is the first cabin on the right after the split rail fence. There are NO street/house numbers. My cabin has two rockers and a bench on the front porch.

There's enough parking for about 3 cars in my drive. The rest will need to park outside of Tanglewood (before the split rail fence) on the right side of the drive (near the historic marker) and walk in.

From Airport area: I-40 to Briley Parkway North. Take exit 14 B (Gallatin Pike South). You'll pass Home Depot on your right, then will come to the light at Haysboro (Shell Station on your right). Stay on Haysboro all the way to Brush Hill. Turn left onto Brush Hill. You will slip under Briley Parkway and then immediately on your left is Tanglewood Court--turn left. Then take the first right, Tanglewood Drive North.

We went to this spot and the celebration last year and it was my first trip to Bells Bend. WOW, What a place to paint!!! Here is an invitation to join in the activities and see and paint in an incredible surrounding. Any place is great, but I'd highly recommend the Bells Bend Nature Center or Brenda's own farm. Saturday, October 24, is the Park2Park celebration, focusing on the beautiful country between Beaman Park on the north and Bells Bend Park on the south, and all artists are invited!

Activities will center around the Scottsboro Community Center and the Nature Center at Bells Bend Park. My suggestion is to come for the afternoon, which will end with an outdoor concert by the group Buffalo Rome at Bells Bend Park. The afternoon autumn light is gorgeous these days.

You are welcome to go just about anywhere to paint in this area—our landowners are pleased to see artists out here.

Below are directions to the Community Center, to Old Cleeces Ferry Road (which is lovely), and to my place, Sulphur Creek Farm (barns, cows, creeks). Please feel free to call me or respond by e-mail. Food available at the Community Center and at Lewis Country Store. Bathrooms at both parks, at the Country Store, at the Community Center, or at my place. Or discreetly behind a bush.

Directions to Bells Bend:

Go west on I-40 towards Memphis and turn north on Briley Parkway (extension of White Bridge Road). Over the river and exit left (west) on Ashland City Highway/Highway 12. In about 2.5 miles you will see Lewis Country Store on the right at an intersection. That intersection is Old Hickory Boulevard.

For Community Center: turn left on Old Hickory, and then take the first right Old Hyde’s Ferry Road about a mile. You will see the Center on the right.

For Bells’ Bend Park: turn left on Old Hickory, and you will see the Park about five miles down the road on the right. The first park sign turns into a parking lot and trail head. A little further down Old Hickory is the Nature Center.

For Old Cleeces Ferry Road: turn left on Old Hickory. Old Cleeces Ferry Road makes a Y off to the right in about three miles.

For Sulphur Creek Farm: turn right on Old Hickory. We are the second farm on the right—there’s a big sign. You can’t miss it!

Note: Do NOT get on Old Hickory Boulevard anywhere south of the Cumberland River and expect to get here. Trust me on this.

Jason Saunders' studio is open again!!!

Autumn Painting Open Studio.
Five Wednesday Nights 5-9:00ish.
$10. each session for the purchase of still life materials and/or model fees.

Sessions: October 21st and 28th
November 11th and 18th
December 9th

Come out to the country to paint and learn. Jason has built a new studio and workspace comfortably large enough for multiple setups. There will be several still life setups, an occational model, as well as plein air opportunities. Located 8 minutes south of Leipers Fork. This is an open studio style class. Anyone is welcome to come out to paint, watch, and/or study. You must bring your own equipment and take it with you each week. Bring your own dinner. No need to register but please notify me if your coming so we do not get too crowded. Maximum of 12 painters.

Proceeds from sales to be shared equally between the artists and the Gallatin Arts Council Scholarship Program.

There is so much art stuff happenening that we're not going to have our regular PAN Saturday paintout.

Saturday - is the annual Octoberfest in Historic Germantown - all day!!! We have painted there twice before and anyone is welcome to just go set up and paint. It's REALLY fun. (I can't make it this year, but don't let that stop you.) If you can't paint, still go and enjoy the food and ... I hear they reward the runners with a little BIER at the finish line!

We teamed up with the Chestnut Group the last couple weeks, but they are going waaaay South tomorrow and I can't be there, so I'm sending y'all to Centennial. Join us for the first neighborhood Big Draw in the United States! We'll meet around 8 AM on Saturday morning October 10th at The Frothy Monkey on (where else?) 12th Avenue South.

Everyone draws between 9 AM - Noon. Then bring your fabulous efforts back to the Big Draw station between Noon - 2 PM.

Afterthoughts:

Thought I'm mention that we can paint anywhere we can get to. There are only a few roads, but plenty of foot paths. Don't climb any fences, open any gates or drive across the wet grass. You can park along any drive/road (to the side) and there's plenty parking at the Farm Shop.

Answers:

1) 39 Miles North of Nashville

2) There is a "facility" in the Farm Shop

3) Yes, it's supposed to rain, but so what!

My weather report says:

9 am - 60% chance

10 am - 50%

11 am - 40%

12 am - 20%

1:00 pm - 10%

2:00 pm - 0% - Some Sun

So, I'm probably not getting there too early.

This is a beautiful working "organic" farm 39 miles North of Nashville, protected by the Land Trust for Tennessee. There's also a SHOP with great "organic" products - open on Saturdays until 4 pm. This will be a good spot for the White House, Hendersonville and Gallatin new faces we've seen lately.

International Plein Air Painters is holding its annual, Worldwide Paintout during the weekend of September 12. I hope you will join Lori Putnam in Nashville Tennessee to paint the streetscapes of Edgehill Village. You do not have to be a member of IPAP to participate in this FREE event.
Plein Air Nashville is joining in on Saturday ..... sounds like a lot of fun.

This is a Repeat from a month ago. Everyone wanted to return, as there is so much here to paint. Harlinsdale Farm has been called the most significant historic farm associated with the modern Tennessee Walking Horse industry. In case you didn't know, this is across Franklin Road from The Factory.

The following was taken from an article by Kevin Walters, which appeared in The Tennessean, 615 771-5472 in July. ..... The park, at 239 Franklin Road, is open to the public daily from dawn until dusk. Built in 1935, the 200-acre farm was owned by the Harlin family and was instrumental in the creation of the Tennessee Walking Horse Industry. The Harlin family sold the farm to the city of Franklin for 8 million in 2004. After the sale, local citizens and groups met to create a plan for the park's eventual completion, said Lisa Clayton, city parks director. "We've come a long way since then, but the park is still a work in progress and there is more to be done," Clayton said in a statement.
There are 16 buildings at the site including horse stables, barns and homes, although none are accessible to the public. A monument to grand champion walking horse Midnight Sun can still be found at the farm. The horse died in 1965.

Note - this is Sunday this week (NOT Sat.), only because of the nice invitation from Brenda Butka, to paint at her house Sunday morning.

"I’d like to invite all painters to a wet paint party at our house, Sulphur Creek Farm in the Bells Bend/Scottsboro area, on Sunday morning, August 30, starting at 7:30.

Our lily pond (next to the house) is particularly lovely right now and we’d like to share it with you! Our Victoria Amazonica might even favor us with a blossom that morning, and the lotuses have been spectacular as well.

There are two barns and the big organic garden, if lily ponds are not your thing, and, of course, all of Bells Bend just down the road.

Directions:

Go out Briley Parkway (extension of White Bridge Road on west side of town), cross the river, take the exit for Ashland City and turn left (west). At the Lewis Country Store, about 2.5 miles, turn right—we are the second farm on the right. Please park down in the pasture or we’ll have driveway gridlock. We do have bathrooms, water, and all amenities.

Sorry to be late passing this on to you .... sounds like a wonderful place for us. Here's your invitation:

All plein air painters are invited to join the folks from Monthaven Art Society to paint at Cragfont Mansion on August 27, 2009 at about 8:00 am or so.
Cragfont's website is down, however you can google Cragfont Mansion, Castalian springs, TN (see below) and get more information. It's a great old place with beautiful grounds. Many interesting views to paint, with something to please the most discriminating taste.

Directions:
From I-40 take Hwy 109 North to Gallatin and go southeast on Hwy 25, approximately 5 miles, turn Left on Cragfont Rd to end.

We hope you can join us for a fun day of plein air painting. Bring your lunch if you can paint that long. Bathrooms are available, unlike some places in Europe, there is no charge. :-)

The Chestnut Group just announced they will be painting here tomorrow and are graciously welcoming us to join them. Please note this is 9:00 a.m. - not our normal time.

The following invitation came from Jean Guald-Jaeger - her cell is 476-2676.

We can arrive anytime after 9:00 AM. There are multiple barns, fields, vistas, lake, large turn of the century farmhouse, cows, other out buildings. Karen Guy is the owner. She said that the gate at the end of the lane may be shut, but not locked, for earlybirds. If it is shut, there is a cotterpin holding it closed. Remove the pin, open the gate, place the pin back where it was and leave the gate open for others. All other gates on the farm must be closed if you drive into a field. She says we can use the bathroom in the house. Bring water and lunch if you want to.

Directions:

These are REVISED a little from the earlier Chestnut email that went out. (If you received one from them, you will probably get these directions from the Chestnut Group a little later.)

At exit 221A the exit ramp puts you onto Old Hickory Blvd heading toward The Hermitage. In about 2.5 miles you will turn right onto Lebanon Pike. In 1.4 miles you will turn left onto Shute Lane. In 0.8 miles you will turn right onto Saundersville Rd. (not Saundersville Ferry Rd.). In 0.2 miles you will see a farm lane to the left leading into Hunter's Hill Farm. There is a small sign indicating the name of the farm but it is not easy to see. If you pass their farm lane you will come to the intersection of Saundersville Rd. and Saundersville Ferry Rd. to the left and Andrew Jackson Pkwy to the right. Turn around and go back a short distance. The farm lane is the last left turn on Saundersville Rd. before you come to the intersection.

Should be a beautiful day tomorrow. Hope to see you at the farm.

We had such a good time painting in the evening a few weeks ago, so we'll try it again. The marina should be a good spot to see the sun set, and with the 30% chance of T-showers tomorrow, I'm hoping for some clouds to make it interesting. They would not let us paint there on Saturdays, but said any time during the week would be fine.

Directions:
Take I-40 East to Exit 219 (Stewarts Ferry Pike) - Go Right
Turn Left at light on Bell Road (go over the dam)
Turn Right (first right after the dam parking lot) into the Marina at Nashville Shores. (You will see signs that say "private" - pay no attention - it just means we cannot go out on the docks.)

Once a private estate, the 207 acre Ellington Agricultural Center is now headquarters for the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, TWRA, and is a branch location for various agencies. Located 10 miles south of downtown Nashville, the Center is the heart of the state's agricultural interests.

There are two maps here - one TO THE CENTER and one OF THE CENTER. If you can, print the Center. It was suggested that we meet at the Stables, as they are centrally located and have parking. Number 9 is The Show Barn which is the Stables.

Andrea Jones suggested this site and has this to say about it ... "I have painted there on several occasions. There are stables (the mounted police stable their horses there), gardens, wooded pastures, a pioneer village, a large historic home with wonderful arched path, a creekside path (easy access to the creek), and ,I think they are making a marsh area. There are also ugly office buildings, but they are easy to ignore.

(We were thinking that the creek would be good for Sat., as it's supposed to be pretty hot.)

This finally opened last week - we've been waiting over a year to paint here again. We're not sure what to expect, but we believe we can now drive to the back part of the farm. So, don't know exactly where to tell you to meet. We'll just have to do some scouting when we arrive.

I'm back to painting cityscapes which I love so much! I painted this piece last night with my "Plein Air Nashville" friends from the pedestrian bridge over the river. What a gorgeous spot to paint from. Thanks to Bitsy for organizing this fun paint out...hope we do more this summer from this location!

The night paintout was a success!! Last night (7/22/09) we painted on the Pedestrian Bridge - Downtown Nashville. All you who stayed home because it was raining at 5:00 really missed a perfect painting night. We did an earlier, daylight one, then some stayed a did a "dark" one. (Next time we'll all remember our lights.)

Sherrie Levine sent me this email ....
"This sounds so good to me, I've been dying to go downtown to paint. But what if it rains...are we still on? I think the reflection downtown in the rain would be good also. If it rains I may go just to take photos. Let me know what you think the weather will do to your plans."
Here's my answer ......
"Rain? Yes, we're still on! We can always take pictures and then hit one of the Grills for a beer and a bite. But I really think if it does anything, it will just be a quick thunderstorm... which we could wait out. (I've been wanting to do this for a long time too.)"
And her reply ....
"Count me in either way. Can't wait...I'll see you there!"

Lisa on Ch 2 just said ... probably rain and thunderstorms in the am and into early pm. Later in afternoon will be a peak of sunshine.

Correction - the lot is on 1st Ave. (not street), just South of Broadway.
I don't see a problem when we arrive in the daylight - but if it's dark when you leave, please use the "buddy system".

Been wanting to try this for sometime. As usual, any painter is welcome. Come early or stay late. Believe you can park on the street free after 6:00 at the meters. Or, there is a lot on 1st street, just South of Broadway - $10 for the evening. Just park as close as you can and walk up. (There is an elevator, but you probably don't want to use it.)

If, for some unknown reason, there is a private function on the bridge and we cannot get up there, let's gather at the train station on the river (foot of Broadway) around 6:00.

Percy Priest Lake - at the Dam

It is supposed to be nice with high of only 79, so we're heading to the lake. (On a hotter day the heat could be unbearable, but should be delightful tomorrow.)

This little park is on the West side of the Dam.
Pull in where you see this sign - Visitors Center - then turn left down the hill and park.

You'll probably see someone fishing.

There are usually some ducks here.

Directions:

Travel East on I-40 to Exit 219 - Stewarts Ferry Pike

Turn Right on Stewarts Ferry Pike

Turn Left at the Stop Light - Bell Road

Turn Right at the sign that says Visitors Center and then down the hill.

There is another good spot on the East side of the Dam - but you will be in the sun. And, just across Bell Road from this entrance is the beginning of (or end of) the Stones River Greenway.
